Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Maurice Maxwell, 49, of Eau Claire, Wis., was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 144 months in prison for possessing crack cocaine with the intent to distribute it. Maxwell was convicted of this charge on December 7, 2011, following a two-day jury trial.

On July 29, 2010, the defendant was arrested. When he was searched, officers found approximately 13 grams of crack cocaine hidden in his underwear. The crack was packaged in five separate bags.

Maxwell has a 30-year criminal history consisting primarily of drug and property crimes. He was convicted of a similar crime in Eau Claire County in 2008.

The charges against Maxwell were the result of an investigation conducted by the West Central Drug Task Force. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
